What to Consider When Building Your Chicken Coop

Final Details of Your Chicken Coop

You’re at a stage where you have decided to go with having your own chicken coop. But before you can go on you need to have a checklist of the final details of your chicken coop construction plans just before embarking on building a proper chicken coop.

Like everyone else you want to raise chickens to get the benefit of having organic eggs on your dinner or breakfast table.

While you’re planning your design and embarking on building your coop you should at-least acknowledge the following few pointers before you start cutting and nailing walls and doors of the coop.

Dimensions of Your Chicken Coop

You first need to get your dimensions spot on. Specially if your yard is like mine a little narrow on one side. Make sure the recommended number of permissible inhabitants of the coop are adhered to.
Having an overcrowded coop can lead to pecking and competition between the chickens.

At this stage you need to make sure the maximum number of chickens your chicken coop can handle. If you aim to have 4 chickens then you want ot make sure your chicken coop can handle at least 8 chickens without having any problems. You want to have some extra space just in case you decide to expand. Recognizing the capacity of the inhabitants of your coop is very critical.

It is imperative that the chickens have enough space to go around and roost.  Chickens can get into fights if overcrowding occurs. Chickens do exercise and roam around just as they would in the wild. They will and want to move within the coop just as well as they happen to be in the yard.

Positioning Your Chicken Coop

Having to build a chicken coop for the backyard brings another main important factor to consider. Where would you be positioning the coop? Having your chickens is one thing but having a chicken coop that is visible to your neighbors is another thing.  If your yard is not visible to your neighbors then you have nothing to worry.

Having a coop that is visible to your neighbors is one area where you need to consider the visual attractiveness of your coop. You want o make sure your coop hase a nice appeal on the visual spectrum.  So splash some color on it to make it look more pleasing to look at it.  There are many ideas one can come up with when designing and thinking about building chicken coops for the backyard.

Building a chicken coop brings the best in a person. You end up thinking long and hard to determine all avenues for building and then all avenues for maintaining it on a regular basis.  Finally there is the aspect of what you will get form your hard work.

So, at this stage you have decided on the size and where you will place your coop. The next stage involves maintaining the coop in the most convenient way. The main area for maintenance is to ensure that you keep the coop in a clean and pristine state at all times.  This not only prevents unsightly look but keeps your yard clean, the smell to a minimum and the best of all keeps your birds disease free.

Maintaining Your Chicken Coop

Expect your chickens to mess up your chicken house.  Because of the confinement they will mess on the floors. Building your floors on an angle makes the cleaning a little bit more easier. When you hose the interior of the chicken house the water will run out leaving very little behind. Having a sloping floor makes it easier to dry after hosing the interiror.

Another important factor in hosing the interior makes it easier to recover the droppings into a bucket to use it as a fertilizer for your plants or a vegetable garden.  Fruit trees also love chicken manure. Chicken manure is an ideal manure or fertilizer that can be used for many species of plants and trees.

Insulating Your Chicken Coop

Other factors to consider while building your very own chicken coop is the positions of the windows.  You might want to make sure you can close it during winter and have it open during summer. Birds can virtually cook in the heat and get cold and die in sever cold days if they are not shielded from extreme temperatures. Keeping this thought brings us to having insulation throughout the main areas of the coop.

Rewarding Experience

Sick chickens are not productive and will eventually stop growing and die. Looking after your chickens brings the best in them.  If you’re getting decent size eggs and nutritiously rich eggs then you’re on the right direction.

Build your chicken coop the right way and consider the points above for a rewarding experience.

Build Your Own Chicken Coop

Backyard Chickens

Ever wondered what it would be like to have ones very own chickens in the backyard. Then why not build your very own chicken house. A healthy chicken will look after you as long as you look after them. A symbiotic relationship between fowl and human. You help them and in turn they will reward you with their fruits, in this case eggs. Much better than a fruit in my opinion. However, we can’t be without fruits either.

Benefits of Chicken Coops

Having a chicken house has many benefits too. Since we mentioned fruits in our writing above, how do chickens help one with fruits.

Simply put: if you have a fruit tree in your backyard you can use the dropping from the chickens as fertilizers to boost healthy soil levels and in turn all the nutrients seep into the roots of the fruit tree.

Organic Chickens

Chickens are lovely creatures who are content on living in small spaces. I am not for those who breed chickens for the sake of profit. No, chickens produced in mass production is not only cruel to them but also inhumane. But, that’s my point of view. I value everyone who has decided to go natural to have their very own chicken coops in their backyard. Even if you decide to consume the chicken at the end it is better than the chickens you buy from your markets.

Maintaining Your Chicken Coops

By having your own chickens you are sending a signal to that kingdom that you don’t want to be part of the cruel world they have entered. They can roam in your space freely an in return they provide you with their eggs. Chickens are like any creature, although not sentient like humans they don’t like to have their freedoms subjected into a cage all their lives.

Chickens who live in a backyard or in open spaces free to roam around during the day are chickens who are content in their existence. For them having a nest or on this case a proper coop (aka chicken house) gives them that security during the night from predators. One needs to keep the chickens safe from roaming cats and other creatures during night time. Chickens also need shelter from cold weather too. So having a properly build chicken coop or chicken house gives them that total security. They look forward to laying their eggs once again the next day or so.

Feeding Your Chickens

Feeding your chickens is also vital. Whatever you feed your chickens will eventually reflect back in the quality of their eggs. Chickens fed well will be great producers of eggs that are basically full of life giving nutritious food.

Having organic eggs gives any person the energy and sustenance to last them all day. When I consume an egg in the morning I feel really full until 3pm. Even at 3pm I don’t feel the need to eat but need to otherwise the cravings start and one tends to put on weight.

Nutritious and Healthy Foods

Eating healthy food will help you in the end to shed weight. Proper nutrition is vital to your health. Looking after your chickens is also a reflection on the mind-full attitude you hold toward yourself. It is show of how well you care for your own body as well.

Building Your Own Chicken Coop

The steps to getting your chicken coop all ready and functioning will take some work on your part but it’s well worth it. As I’ve mentioned above of the importance to your health and also how it reflects your humanity toward these creatures. Whatever the purpose you have for your backyard chicken coops there is a part of you that really cares for these creatures. It is a joy to have them around and another to see life in ones backyard. It also adds value to your existence.

The job of building a coop can be best described as one of exhilaration and joy. Build it once and enjoy it forever. Look after it from time to time and use a bit of your time maintaining it and you will have a never ending supply of healthy food. It is because of your attitude in having your own chicken coop and chickens the whole family will appreciate them around and also feel value in life.

Caring does something to us. It is about giving. When you care and give you produce a bright world around you. Your whole world starts to have a different light with meaning and joy.

Your life Your Choice

Folks the bottom line is: if you’re living a healthy life then you will never need to see a doctor, a pharmacy or a life insurance agent.

This equates to so much money that you can invest in your family.  You really need to invest in your own family since they are your future.

You won’t put on those ugly and unnecessary kilos that people get from eating too much junk food, and you will be a down to earth person who will see the world in true color while most sleep walk through life and see the world in gray. It is those who are unhealthy are the ones who fall around and live destitute lives.

Chicken Coop a Difference

Only you can make the difference to your own life. Having a chicken coop that has hard working owner putting work into maintaining it will eventually get quality organic eggs to at-least supplement a days intake of nutrition. Supplement the rest of the daily intake of your vitamins with organic vegetables and fruits from your garden to give you and your family a 10 out of 10 points for having a real organic existence. Thank you and good luck in having your own chicken coop (aka chicken house).
