The Gouldian Finch Came From Australia

Gouldian Finches call the Australian tropics home. Previous to 1960 these little birds were sought after exports from Australia, but in the 60’s, the government banned the exportation of pretty much all animals and birds indigenous to the country. Gouldian Finches are actually an endangered species in their native habitat, but you can find many Gouldian Finches in other countries, America included, for purchase. Gouldian Finches show up within the most well-liked pets for children and adults alike in just about every country on the planet. Families absolutely adore these fabulous birds.

The Beautiful Colors of The Gouldian Finch

The Gouldian Finch is one of the most brilliantly colored birds with streaks of coloration in their feathering that works to make them genuinely beautiful birds. The colors are widely varied, and Gourdian Finches may have head coloring of red, orange, or grey, with blue or even green backs, while the breasts and below vary from purple colors, white-colored or yellowish. Gouldian Finches have 3 basic colorings that occur naturally. The three varieties are: the Poephila Gouldiae, or more commonly called “Black-Headed” Gouldian Finch; the Poephila Mirabils, commonly known as the Red-Headed Gouldian Finch; and the Poephila Armitiana, or yellow headed Gouldian Finch. But, there is an immense range of colorations within the Gouldian Finch family in addition to these basic colors. This includes mixtures of blue and yellow.

A Gouldian Finch Needs Tender Care

The male Gouldian Finch is greater in color variations than the female Gouldian Finch. In addition to having more versions of colorations than the female, the male Gouldian Finch has a noticeably longer tail feather. There is no disputing the great beauty of the male Gouldian Finch. They rule supreme, and they behave like it. Gouldian Finches bring with their wonder a much more challenging task in the proper care and breeding of these Finches. They are not as sturdy as the Zebra and Society Finches. They are not sturdy and their tolerance for extremes is not as big as their more hearty brethren. It is recommended that a new owner of a Finch should start off with the more resilient Finch, and then with working experience, graduate to owning a Gouldian Finch. The owner of a Gouldian Finch should keep in mind that these tiny birds do not like being held (unlike the Society Finch) or petted. If you’re one of those who would like to finger train a Finch (getting a Finch to sit on your finger), do not get a Gouldian Finch. A Gouldian Finch is a Sociable Bird

Gouldian Finches want company. Do not just obtain a single Gouldian Finch. Get a pair of Gouldian Finches. All Gouldian Finches are sociable and should be kept in one or more couples in order to fill their need to be social. The owner of a Gouldian Finch also needs to know that these little birds will get stressed over abrupt movement in or out of the cage, and in constant changes in the environment. In short, don’t move the objects around. Moving objects around delivers stress to the Finch and if they encounter frequent stress, it can damage their immune system. Like their cousins, Gouldian Finches are very active birds. They also need a good sized cage for zooming about. Get a Finch cage that is expansive so they have room to play. You can get a real wood or metal cage, but make certain the bars are not too wide, or else you might possibly cause the bird to be hurt. If you get a stainless steel cage, make sure it isn’t brass, as this can be harmful. Consult with your pet store salesman to insure the cage is safe for your Gouldian Finch.
