There is that time on the farm every year between winter when it’s too cold to work outside and spring when planting season comes around and takes up all of your daylight time.  But usually in between, there’s unseasonably warm weather…sometimes it sticks around for days, sometimes weeks and then comes another frost.  In the meantime, being outside is a must because the past says that it will definitely get cold again before the spring warmth officially sets in for good.  It is during this time that it is a great opportunity to start some spring cleaning around the farm.

With that being said, a good fence system is always a necessary evil.  It keeps animals in and intruders out.  However, there are often wobbly posts, chipped paint on the fences and broken gates that need to be repaired.  Remember to get out everything you need in advance and pack it onto your UTV racks or SUV rack so all of the time is not spent searching for tools and supplies on the job.

Cleaning out dead trees and underbrush is another crucial task to undertake in great weather.  Not only does trimming encourage new growth, but spring brings new growth with the weather as well, so give them the best preparation possible to thrive.  Using downed trees and limbs that were cleared can also be used to replenish the woodpile from the last winter.  Another way to utilize the old wood is to turn it into those boards needed for mending fences.

Performing maintenance and annual checkups are also necessary before the warm weather comes around.  During the months after, farm equipment will be used more than any other time of the year, so routine maintenance is absolutely necessary to prevent future problems.

Cleaning the barn is another task no one likes to tackle but during the summer when it gets used the most and everyone is too busy with everyday chores, organizing the barn is usually last on the list to be completed.  Keeping a clean and organized barn, though, can save time and sanity during the hectic months around the farm.  Knowing where extra supplies and tools are when needed can save time, but more importantly, money, so there isn’t double being bought.

Responsibilities and chores around the farm never seem to be finished, but these annual spring cleaning items should be done every year so when the weather gets a little warm outside, and spring seems like it’s just around the corner, get your spring cleaning list accomplished. It will save you more time down the road than you think.
