It really isn’t too hard to build a chicken coop and if you want to build it yourself, go for it, you will learn a lot. Of course, if time is your main concern, buying a ready made coop through the internet might be the answer, but if you are thinking in terms of budget and meeting your needs, building one yourself is the way to go.

A clear, well-written building plan is essential if you are planning to construct the coop yourself. A good beginning always precedes a good ending. Your chicken coop plans should be written with the final product in mind.

Experienced builders don’t start a project with knowing what is going to be required and having planned for this. You might not have built a chicken coop before, but you will have much more success if you follow this advice.

1. Go Big

It is always a good idea to plan for expansion. Build a coop that is bigger than what you need right now. A small coop might meet your immediate needs but you limit yourself and your flock if you build a coop that is too small.

2. Location is Everything

Fresh water is a daily need for a flock of chickens so makes sure you have a nearby source of fresh water that will meet this need. If your coop is near a nature water source you will save yourself a lot of work and effort since you won’t have to constantly change and transport the water.

3. Keep it Safe

Ideally you would not have to worry about enemies attacking your crop. Depending on your location, predators may be a consideration. You can protect your chickens by building a wire fence that encloses the coop and is securely set into the ground.

4. Be Internet Savvy

There are many, many plans that can be downloaded or purchased from the internet. Not all are ones you want to follow, some are inaccurate, lack detail, or are inflexible. Choose your plan with care.
